ANYBODY FOR SOME TRENCH BALL?

July 31, 1924

Thank God Mama got home before ten o'clock last night and with her clothes still unwrinkled, otherwise I don't know how I could've walked into the Baker Bowl club house today. Cy Williams staying out all night with my mother? I wouldn't know whether to grin about it or find a gun.

Speaking of guns, today we had one of those games where you're being barraged with one hit after another for nine straight innings. I can only imagine what those trenches were like in Europe for poor Papa during the War but they must have been like this, except with deadly shells and mustard gas instead of doubles and the stuff you put on pretzels.

We know Oescheger's always in trouble, but Sothoron usually pitches okay for St. Louis so he was the surprise stinker. Good old Cy, in a happier mood than I've ever seen him, smacked a long homer shot in the 1st to put us up 3-0, and after five Card hits and two runs in the 2nd, we got two more on four singles and the second passed ball of the game by their catcher Clemons.

Oeschie's arm must've been made out of gunpowder, because the Cards seemed like they were getting three or four hits every inning. The problem was that Steineder and Betts had been overused by Fletcher the last few days and really had to rest. All we had were terrible Glazner and ridiculous Mitchell to bail us out. Sure enough, a Flack triple and Cooney single got them two runs in the 5th, before singles from Smith, Hornsby and Bottomley tied the game 5-5 in the 6th.

I kept looking around for Mama back in her front row seat, but she never made it. She was still sleeping this morning when I got up and made my own breakfast, but Cy did just fine without her watching him all afternoon. His single was one of five straight hits we began our 7th with, and four runs later we were up 9-5 and looking good.

Except Oeschie was still out there. He walked the first guy in the 8th, booted a grounder, and then Fletcher put Glazner in anyway. Two singles and a deep fly came right away, and it was 9-8!

Miracles can even happen on a sleepy Thursday in July, though. Whitey whiffed the scary Ray Blades to begin the 9th. The not-so-mighty-lately Hornsby rolled out to third and Bottomley to second and we'd pulled off a second straight squeaky win!

St. Louis had fired off twenty hits, and if baseball players ever wore helmets we'd have a bunch of dents in ours. The Cards also left sixteen runners on the bases, which is a good reason why they can't seem to get higher than fifth place. Tomorrow we begin August, reader-people, so I've added some league statistics I was able to nab from Fletcher's office after the game.

Only National League games today:

PIRATES 5-9-1, at GIANTS 3-7-0
And another joke of a show put on by the McGraw Circus. Bentley gives the Bucs four runs before half the Polo Grounders are in their seats. It's 5-0 by the time the Giants wake up and score three times in the 4th, after which they drop dead for the half-speed throws of Lee Meadows. New York needed to sweep these guys to have any chance at all, and now they're ten games out.

REDS 4-4-0, at BRAVES 0-4-2
About time Cincy won again, their 60th of the season, and they do it with just four hits off Cooney. It helps that one is a three-run triple by George Burns. Rube Benton gets the shutout.

at ROBINS 3-7-0, CUBS 0-3-1
Dazzling shutout from Bill Doak, and Fournier rams his league-leading 25th homer out of Ebbets. I see them possibly passing the Reds soon.
